Accept The Call

Paul encourages Timothy to accept his calling. It involves committing to something bigger than himself, willingly sacrificing and enduring challenges to accomplish a greater good.

2 Timothy mentions corrupt teachers who abandoned the hope of Jesus' Resurrection and new creation for a hyper-spiritualized Christianity that is disconnected from daily life.

Paul calls Timothy to raise faithful leaders who will teach the good news about Jesus and focus on the Scriptures' core story line and message.

SUMMARY: Canonically, the Second Book of Timothy is the fifty-fifth book of the Holy Bible (1), the eleventh of fourteen Letters of Paul (2) and the sixteenth book of the New Testament (3). Paul's final and most personal letter, 2 Timothy encourages church planter Timothy to accept his calling and deal with corrupt teachers (4). From the somber nature of this letter, it is apparent that Paul knew that his work was done and that his life was nearly at an end (2 Timothy 4:6-8) (a).

The letter also reminds Timothy to maintain faith (Romans 10:17) and Hope (5) in  Jesus' (6) Resurrection (7) and to raise faithful leaders who will teach the good news (8) about Jesus. They must focus on the Scriptures' unified story line that leads to salvation in Jesus and helps believers achieve their purpose of spreading the good news.

While following Jesus, believers will experience challenges, suffering, risk, tension, discomforts and struggles (9). In those dark and difficult moments, Jesus' presence, love (10) and faithfulness can become tangible and real, which imprisoned and abandoned Paul and generations of Christians after him, know firsthand (b).
