BIBLE TRIVIA

The Holy Bible (1) mentions the term "Disciples" for the first time in Isaiah 8:16, written over 700 years before the birth (2) of Jesus Christ (3). Followers of Jesus were first referred to as "Christian" (4) at Antioch (5) (Acts 11:25-26). When on trial for his preaching, the Apostle Paul (6) introduced himself to Roman Governor Felix (7) as a "follower of the Way" (Acts 24:14).

WHAT IS DISCIPLESHIP?

When Jesus said, “Go and make disciples” (Matthew 28:19), He was addressing His own disciples. In other words, He was telling them, “Go and make more of you.” They were to clone themselves; their mission was to spread the gospel germ to those around them. Regardless of their personal limitations, their success was contingent on the authenticity of their personal experience with God (8). The closer they could align their minds and hearts with the mind and heart of Jesus, the more evident it would be to the outside world that, although inexperienced, “they had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13) (a).

THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP
 

Following Jesus Christ is different than being a fan of Jesus Christ. This is defined for us in Luke 9:57-62, where we might proclaim our allegiance to Christ BUT BUT BUT we place one foot back into our former life. As we get to know Jesus a little more intimately through the Scriptures, we come to believe that His way (known as "The Way" in the first century) is counter cultural from the ways of this world.

 
For instance, the account of The Rich and the Kingdom of God (Matthew 19:16-30, Mark 10:17-31 and Luke 18:18-30) exposes real obstacles that lie in between Us and Jesus. Tragically, the love of money (1 Timothy 6:10, Hebrews 13:5) and/or material possessions are but a few of an endless list of earthly roadblocks stopping us from unconditionally surrendering to Christ so that we may become an unswerving follower of His.
