What is Fasting?
Fasting is when we voluntarily choose to forego something (not necessarily food) we normally partake in so that we are able to come closer to God (1). In other words, we are putting something aside for the purpose of increasing our spiritual awareness. So, it's not just about not eating for a day or two. It's about enhancing our personal relationship with the Most High, so we can go in the direction He desires us to travel in.
When Should We Fast?
Fasting is a Jesus-approved, Bible-based manner in which to rekindle our spiritual fire and there are many circumstances which call us to fast. They include, but are not limited to, individual, couples or corporate fasting:
What the Bible Says About Fasting
Nowhere in the Bible (2) are we commanded to fast. However, the Scriptures tell us our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ (3), fasted for 40 (4) days & nights in the desert while preparing for His upcoming Ministry (5). If we're striving to be more Christlike, it only makes sense that we, as His followers (6), do our humanly best to follow His examples. Amen? The Good News also discloses that leaders of the early Church fasted as well (Acts 13:1-3).
Conduct During a Fast
Fasting is an internal, spiritual act between you and God that is not meant to be shared with others. Those who have fasted understand that it is not designed to be comfortable. For example, abstaining from our normal intake of food and drink may cause hunger pangs. This, in turn, may cause irrational behavior or a heightened sense of irritability. "Blowing our witness" (in this instance, because we're hungry) in the presence of others defeats the purpose of the fast.
There's a comical video floating around out in Social Media Land spoofing a man fasting. Actually, it's a video that could be titled, "How NOT to Fast." It depicts a man at his place of work and he's lamenting about his fasting to everyone who he comes in contact with. Matthew 6:16-18 tells us that our fasting is to be kept between us and God and that we're not supposed to appear gloomy and downtrodden while we fast. Lastly, rather than focusing on what we're losing/sacrificing/giving up, we should try to focus on the purpose of our fast and how it is destined to bring us closer to the King of all kings and His purpose for us.
